Wedding planning advice: Your Wedding Reception
After the ceremony and before the wedding breakfast is served there is traditionally the receiving line, which allows you to greet all the guests at your wedding. It’s a great opportunity for you to make sure you do get to say hello and thank you to everyone who has travelled to your wedding, as sometimes in the excitement of the day you don’t get the chance. But remember to keep it brief, otherwise the day’s timings can go to pot, and the first guests through could spend ages staring at your beautiful wedding menus and drinking all the table wine.
Wedding breakfast?
When I first started working in the wedding industry I found the term wedding breakfast relating to the food you serve at your wedding reception, very confusing. After all its not as if you are serving your guests muesli, porridge or bacon sarnies! The name has two possible origins. One says that as it is called wedding breakfast as it is the first meal of a couple's married life, just as breakfast is the first meal of the day. Another suggests the name comes from the tradition that the bride and bridegroom would have been fasting before the wedding, and so the reception would be when they would break their fast and therefore their first meal of the day.
Seasonal food
Whatever the tradition, your wedding breakfast is a great way to use local suppliers and seasonal produce. After all the average Sunday dinner has travelled over 25,000 miles to get to your plate! And not only that but seasonal food tastes better as it is fresher and therefore has more nutrients to help balance out all the alcohol you’ll be consuming!! So ask your venue how local and seasonal the food they serve is. And if you want a guide to seasonal food in Britain look at www.bbc.co.uk/food/in_season
Mouthwatering menus
After taking all that time to choose your food, it’s a great idea to show off the food with a menu on the table so all the guests know exactly what they will be eating and drinking. You can also add notes on who is doing the speeches.
